About the event
Afro and Capoeira Dance Workshops with Kate Richardson & Contramestre Loki
Afro Dance Workshop - Kate Richardson - Starting at 1:00pm
Kate Richardson has over 20 years of dance experience in Ballroom/Jazz/Commercial/ Latin and South American dance. Kate originally founded Subsdance Dance Studio Canberra where she both danced and directed for 10 years, with achievements such as the Australian Latin Dance Championships with Dancer and Coach under her belt. She has both learnt and performed in Brazil including Rio Carnival and in Sydney.
“Over the years my passion for Brazilian dance culture grew, particularly with its roots and foundation- the Afro Brazilian styles and history. It became a part of me, almost like a meditation, a release and I sought out more knowledge from the likes of Rosangela Silverstre and Pablo Guerreiro to teach me more about the spirituality and connection that this style provides. So much more than dance, this style is life itself! The most energising, fun, free and rewarding movement! Come and experience it for yourself, no experience necessary just an open heart!"
This class will be a mix of Afro Brazilian and Traditional African movements.
Capoeria Intro Workshop - Contramestre Loki - Starting at 2:30pm
ContraMestre Loki has been practising Capoeira since the mid 90's where he would gather with other like minded Capoeiristas to learn and train Capoeira. He then moved to Bondi Beach in order to learn off Mestre Jeronimo and after that, he started to travel over to Brasil to dive deeper into the cultural art of Capoeira Angola with Mestre Moraes, Mestre João Pequenho and Mestre Curio. Since then, ContraMestre Loki has returned to Brasil several times in order to participate in Rodas (Gatherings) and co-teach with other Capoeira Angola Mestres.
In between visiting Brasil, ContraMestre Loki is either teaching in schools around the Canberra region or playing in his Choro band promoting Brasilian culture.
This class will be an introduction to the Music and Movements of Capoeira where the participants will become familiar with the instruments, the Rhythms, songs and the some of the moves and how they relate to other Afro-Brasilian forms of movement such as Samba.
